How you may reuse the content of this wiki — and where it comes from.

This wiki collects facts about historical playing cards, their makers and their tax stamps, and shows images of cards in the public domain. We want this knowledge to be freely reusable. This page says what that means in practice.

Anyone wanting to fetch the data by machine will find the way to do so on the page Reusing the data.

The data: public domain, no conditions

All structured data in this wiki — makers, dates, places, tax stamps, collections, and the relationships between them — is released under CC0 1.0 (Public Domain Dedication).

That means you may copy, adapt and reuse it for any purpose — including commercially — without crediting us and without asking us first. Credit is appreciated, not required.

The images: a status per image, no blanket rule

We decide on images individually, not as a blanket rule:

Public-domain cards

Our photographs and scans of public-domain cards are themselves public domain. A

 faithful reproduction of a public-domain work does not create a new right (§ 68 of the
 German Copyright Act, § 74 of the Austrian Act, Article 14 of EU Directive 2019/790).
 Free to use.

Material released to us by someone

Under whichever open licence is stated, with attribution.

Cards still in copyright

We do not show these as an image, only as a data entry — unless the rights

 holder has agreed.

Every image carries its rights status on the image entry. When in doubt, we show no image.

We stay reachable: addresses do not change

Every entry in this wiki has a fixed address built from its Q-number, for example https://spielkarten.wiki/entity/Q1900 for Radau and Flöter's book on playing cards in Regensburg. We keep these addresses stable. Anyone linking to us from a catalogue, an article or their own database should be able to do so permanently.

If an entry turns out to be a duplicate, we do not delete it; we redirect its address to the surviving entry.

Where our data comes from

Historical place and territory data

Partly from the Geschichtliches Ortsverzeichnis (GOV) of the Verein für

 Computergenealogie, gov.genealogy.net. The GOV data is
 licensed CC-BY-SA 4.0. Thanks to CompGen.

Maker and catalogue data

Among other sources, from mpcia.at (Wolfgang Altfahrt), with kind permission. The

 source is given at each entry.

Authority data

From Wikidata (CC0).

Association material

From the TALON yearbooks, released by the board.

Where an entry is based on a printed source, it is recorded via the property ist beschrieben in (P78, "is described in") on the entry itself — with catalogue number and page, as far as the source gives them.

How we relate to the OpenGLAM principles

We follow the five OpenGLAM principles for open cultural data and the Open Definition 2.1. Specifically:

• The metadata is in the public domain (CC0) — principle 1.
• We claim no new rights over reproductions of public-domain works — principle 2.
• This page is the required explicit reuse statement — principle 3.
• Access is machine-readable and openly documented, see

 Reusing the data — principle 4.

There is no certification for OpenGLAM. We therefore say "consistent with", not "certified by".

Third-party components

Logos of the association and its sponsor

The logos in the header of the front page, in the sponsor box, in the sidebar and on the page Förderer are protected word and figurative marks of their respective owners — the association TALON – Österreichischer Spielkartenverein and the company Ferd. Piatnik & Söhne.

The CC0 release above does not apply to them. It concerns the data of this wiki, not third-party marks. We display these logos with the owners' permission and only for the purpose of naming the wiki's backer and sponsor. Any further use requires the respective owner's consent; the conditions are on each file description page.

Software libraries

The interactive search tools in this wiki use a third-party software library. Its copyright notice and licence terms are given here because they must be included — and because they are no longer visible in the delivered file itself: MediaWiki minifies wiki JavaScript on delivery and strips all comments in doing so.

In the wiki, the library lives as MediaWiki:Gadget-leaflet.js and MediaWiki:Gadget-leaflet.css; the five image files (map pin, shadow, layers icon) are embedded in it as data.

Would you like to contribute something?

Only upload what is in the public domain or for which you hold a free licence. For cards whose designer died less than 70 years ago, and for modern editions still in copyright: no image — the data entry alone is welcome.
